Clean Up Recorded Audio: Formats, Tags, and Files
Turn a usable recording into an organized audio file: choose a format, check metadata, fix names and cover art, and keep a sensible archive copy.

Getting a file is only the first half of recording audio. Before you move it to a phone, USB drive, or music library, make sure it plays correctly, has a name you can recognize, and is stored in a format that fits the job.
This guide is for recordings you are allowed to keep. It does not promise that a new file will improve the quality of a compressed stream. Cleanup makes a recording easier to find and use; it cannot put detail back into the original source.
Start With a 60-Second Review
Open the finished file before you rename, convert, or delete anything. Check four things:
- Playback: listen to the beginning, a middle section, and the end. Look for silence, a notification, a missing section, or an abrupt split.
- Identity: confirm the title and artist if it is music. For spoken audio, use a clear programme, episode, or date label instead.
- File location: note the output folder. A good filename does not help if the recording is buried in Downloads.
- Purpose: decide whether this is a small listening copy, an editing copy, or a long-term archive. That decision should drive the format.

Choose the Format for the Job
There is no universally best audio format. Pick the smallest practical compromise for the file you need now, and keep a lossless copy only when it has a real purpose.

MP3 is a sensible default for many listening libraries. M4A/AAC is also a practical choice, particularly when that is what your devices already handle well. WAV is uncompressed and simple, but it takes more storage. FLAC is lossless while usually taking less space than WAV. Neither WAV nor FLAC can make a low-quality source sound high-resolution.

Name Files So They Stay Useful
The best filename is boring and searchable. It tells you what the file is without relying on a media player to read tags.
For identified music, a pattern such as this is usually enough:
Artist - Title.ext
For an album-oriented library, add the album and track number only when you have checked that information:
Artist\Album\01 - Title.ext
For a radio show, lesson, or webinar, favor a date and subject over guessed metadata:
2026-07-22 - Interview with Jane Doe.mp3
Avoid filenames such as New Recording 12, track01, or final-final. They become impossible to sort once there are dozens of files. Cinch can apply filename patterns when track information is available; otherwise, edit the name manually after you verify the recording.

Fix Metadata Without Guessing
Metadata is the information a player displays: title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, cover art, and sometimes lyrics. It is valuable, but it should be treated as a claim to check—not as proof that the recorder heard the correct track.
Use this order:
- Play the recording and make sure the audio itself is the right track or episode.
- Check the title and artist against what you heard or a source you trust.
- Add or correct the album, year, genre, and track number only when you know them.
- Add cover art that actually belongs to that release, not just a visually similar image.
- Save, then reopen the file in your usual player to confirm the changes appear.

Deal With Splits, Short Fragments, and Silence
Do not merge everything automatically. Listen first and sort the results into three groups:
- Keep: complete recordings that start and end where you expected.
- Merge: adjacent fragments that clearly belong to the same recording and have no unwanted sound between them.
- Remove or re-record: tiny alerts, ads, accidental starts, or files with the wrong audio.
If a recording is split because the source paused or buffered, merging may be appropriate. If it is split because the playback device changed, the next capture needs a setup fix instead. Review the short-clip and merge controls before recording a long playlist again, then make a short test rather than discovering the problem after an hour.

A Simple Finish-Line Checklist
Before you call the job done, make sure you can answer yes to each question:
- Does the file play from start to finish?
- Did it capture the intended audio, without unrelated notifications or system sounds?
- Is the filename understandable outside the recorder?
- Are the displayed title, artist, and cover correct where those fields matter?
- Is the chosen format appropriate for listening, editing, or archiving?
- Is there a working copy to keep if you will edit or convert the file again?
